After reading Bonnie's post this morning about their drive to New Brunswick, it reminded me that I hadn't posted about our trip yet - perhaps because I'm trying to forget it... In all honesty, it really wasn't that bad. I was exhausted at the end of it, but it really wasn't that bad.
Last Saturday started with Trevor getting up around 4am to be on the road shortly after 5am. He wanted to be through Montreal early enough to avoid traffic and be in Fredericton long enough to unpack the car and get settled a bit before having to come pick me up at the airport. When I had booked the tickets about a month prior, there weren't a lot of low points (aeroplan) options for the week after school ended, and I thought that a very late flight might be good as the kids would sleep. Well... that didn't quite work out...
We got up as we normally would in the morning and did our normal morning routine. We had forgotten to pick up some pull-ups which we needed for the flight, so ran into the Superstore for that and a few other things. The kids had their normal naps and we got ready to go. Though we were only in the car at 3:50pm, it felt like we'd been travelling all day because I'd been thinking about it and somewhat agonizing about how it was going to go. Funny thing - Trev got to my parents house about 1/2 hr before we left the house.
Our drive was fairly quiet until we got to the other side of Cornwall - mainly just Christine and I singing while Nicholas slept as this was his normal nap time. Then he woke up... and the drive became quite painful. We stopped for a short feeding and that helped a little bit. He was still crying, but not to the point of making himself sick anyway. So we kept driving until we hit Dorion where we stopped at McDonald's for "dinner" and some play time in the play structure for Christine. This also gave Nicholas a break from his carseat, which he obviously hates. After that, he fell asleep on the way to the airport so we had some quiet time again. We parked and got on the bus to get in the airport and Nicholas woke up and screamed until I got him out of the carseat again when we got to the gate. I'm sure EVERYONE that was sitting at the gate waiting for their flights all looked at me and thought to themselves "I hope their not on MY flight"...
Anyway, he quieted down after I put him and Christine into their PJ's for the flight. Christine, on the other hand got her second wind... and so the marathon began... At least our flight was on time, so we were leaving Montreal around 21:10 (ET) and arrived in Fredericton at about 23:30 (AT). Christine was in and out of her seat, wanting to see the people in front of and behind us, she tried to lay on the floor, on me, in her seat... and she kept commenting that almost everyone was sleeping like it was the weirdest thing in the world... Nicholas mostly slept on me in the wrap. Christine did finally fall asleep in the car on the way home around midnight. She did sleep in a little bit on Sunday, but I think it was about Wednesday before we were recovered.
Trevor postponed his trip back home to stay a couple of days and head back with Kevin by car on Friday. Our week here together flew by. We're hoping that he'll be able to finish the work around the house quickly and maybe find someone who's travelling this way later in the month to come back sooner. We'll see what happens.
